Nanortalik, Greenland July 19, 2014
Cloudy 40 degrees Sunset 10:01 pm
Travel to a small island near the mouth of the Tasermiut Fjord at the very southern tip of the world’s largest island, Greenland, and find the small town of Nanortalik, which translates to the ‘place of polar bears’.
It was a nice day here. This was our first port with large icebergs all around us. One of them calved this morning splitting in two. We had to tender into port. Being a 4 star, we went to the showroom, showed them our card and proceeded directly to the tender. It was very easy and smooth. Once in town we wandered all around. We came upon the fish market and they were cleaning something out back. They got very irate with us coming to watch or taking any pictures. Turns it was black whale meat. They were hauling it out in black garbage bags. We are guessing that was illegal the way we were all run off and they were trying to get everything thing cleaned up. One man took a large black trash bag of it up the hill. The store itself was locked and you could only get in through the back door if you were local. They did not want us in there. Other than that it was peaceful walk in a colorful town. No polar bears, just some dogs running around. Last tender is 1:00pm so we can make our way to Iceland.
About time to head for lunch then Dad is off to see the movie, Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit. Mom and I got some wool blankets and laid them across our laps as we sat out and watched the ice bergs coast by us. Sail away was beautiful. Pictures cannot do it justice.
Dad met up with us after the movie and we hit the casino then on to the Lido to get a table and watch the world and icebergs pass by. As we sat at dinner we were still watching ice bergs pass the window. We had cauliflower soup for dinner as well as bourbon glazed cod with mashed potatoes. The cod was not to my liking, something in the sauce but the chocolate sundae for dessert more than made up for it.
We hung out with Barry from Boston for a while and then back to the room. We are going to flip through all of our pics tonight than some reading.
We are rocking a bit tonight so it should be good sleeping. Night from the rocking and rolling MS Veendam.
